Climbing Mt. Kenya for a Worthy Cause

Team Seremala, comprising the trustees and their two daughters, will be taking the Mt. Kenya Challenge in December 2014! We are super excited at the prospect of this event because it will allow us to fund-raise for one of our favourite causes; the care and support for the orphaned secondary school children at Macheo Children's Centre.

The inspiration for this activity came from a recently published story of a ten-year old child who scaled the mountain becoming the youngest Kenyan to scale up to Point Lenana. The directors/trustees had also been strategizing on how to scale-up and create a perpetual, self-sustaining scholarship fund that would increase the capacity of the Foundation to meet the needs of more orphans. This initiative is one of the ways in which we intend to achieve this objective. We are trying to raise funds to create a scholarship fund (approx. KES 10million). The current budget required to support the 11 children we presently support is approximately KES 700,000 per annum. The orphans are currently between high school going age and college.

Seremala Foundation will match each shilling raised through this initiative with one shilling of funds from the foundation up to the tune of KES 1,000,000.

Seremala Foundation was established on the Christian Faith of the directors of Seremala Engineering and Construction Limited and is the basis of our giving. We believe that by reaching out and extending a helping hand to the orphaned and the widowed in our community, we touch the heart of God.

We were inspired to start the Seremala Foundation to give back in our community. By contributing what we can, even in the smallest way, we also contribute to the development of our nation and our country's vision 2030. We seek to stop the cliche that there are no homegrown solutions to the challenges of our communities in Kenya; that a difference can only be made by donors from developed countries or from the government. By doing what we can, we hope that a difference can be realized in the lives of those in our society who need it most. When each individual helps another in need, the ripple effect can be amazing.

Lastly we sponsor because we want our children and the children we sponsor to learn from us and catch the vision. We deliberately take our children along in meeting the students we sponsor as well as other activities of the Foundation; and involve them in our meeting with the children we sponsor to keep the legacy of Seremala Foundation going.

In keeping with our principle to give to those in our society less-privileged than we have been, Seremala Foundation contributed desks to a primary school in Amboseli.

During our visit to the area, we interacted with the area chief who cited to us the lack of basic school infrastructure as a significant contributor to poor access to education in the local community. Because we build, it seemed a natural fit for us to engage the community by providing some desks, a basic requirment for the community's childrens while they are in school. Together with our children, we visited one of the local schools to donate the desks. We called this project "Desking the Undesked. It is our desire to be able to impact society through what we do as a trade. For the students sponsored by the foundation who have completed school and have embarked on Technical courses, we want to offer apprenticeship opportunities through which they will gain technical competencies and hands-on-experience, that will in turn give them better access to the labour market and entreprenuerial skills.

The management of Seremala recently hosted the entire staff team to a Christmas party in December 2012. It was a time of reflection on the successes of the year as well as celebrating the team members who excelled in the duties as well as those who have been in long-service to the company. We also invited several of our business partners and thanked them for their immense contribution.

Seremala FoundationTaking the CSR Challenge

"We the directors of Seremala Construction & Engineering Ltd founded Seremala Foundation in March 2010 to reach out to the orphaned and the widowed. We work closely with Macheo Children's Centre in Thika who have outreach programs in the nearby Kinadutu slums . We are currently sponsoring 10 children through high school and 3 through college. We hope to increase this number as we carry out more fundraising activities"

Why do we sponsor?

  • Because when you reach out and help the orphaned and the widowed...you literally touch the heart of God!
  • Because we want our daughters, the children we sponsor, our staff and anyone else in our circle of influence to learn from us and catch the vision. We deliberately carry our daughters along and involve them in the foundation activities inorder to keep Seremala Foundation alive long after we are gone.
  • Because we want Seremala Foundation to be the CSR wing of Seremala Construction & Engineering, educating the orphaned through high school, college and upon completion, providing internship at our company.
  • Because we want.... even in the smallest way to contribute to our country's vision 2030. We want to stop the mentality that a difference can only be made by donors from developed countries or from government. A difference can be made when each individual helps another in need....the ripple effect can be amazing.

Come join us in our various fundraising activities as we influence our society positively! "
